The Marian Bergeson Aquatics Complex (MBAC) was put into service in 1990 after construction was completed with funds contributed by the City of Newport Beach, Newport-Mesa Unified School District (NMUSD), and donations from many businesses and individuals throughout the community. Since it opened, MBAC has been used daily, nearly year-round, for aquatics activities ranging from high school water polo and swim teams, physical education classes, and various community-wide aquatics programs, including youth water polo, competitive swimming, adult lap swimming, seasonal swimming instruction, life guard training, and much, much more. MBAC has also served as a venue for many regional, national, and international aquatics competitions and events.
The CdM Community Aquatics Facility Foundation (CCAFF) has completed three phases of updates and upgrades to MBAC since 2005. The pool remodel, drainage, & deck repair (phase 1) were completed in September, 2007. Permanent cantilevered shade structures and lighting were installed over the bleacher areas (phase 2) at the end of December, 2008. And over the summer of 2009, the existing buildings were renovated to include new coaches' offices, audio-visual equipment, and storage rooms. Additionally, a new wireless scoreboard, trophy cases, and deck lighting have all been installed (phase 3).
The value of all the improvements made to date is approximately $1,400,000, and funds have been provided by the Newport Mesa Unified School District, the City of Newport Beach, and the community.
Most recently, CCAFF's architect has prepared plans for a new 3000 square foot restroom/shower/locker room building (phase 4), including new toilet facilities, 16 new showers and over 200 lockers. Phase 4 will cost approximately $600,000 to design & build. Completion of phase 4 will depend on when the plans are approved by DSA and other governing bodies, and when sufficient funds to finance the final phase of the project have been raised. Our goal is to raise the funds needed for the locker rooms & showers by March 31, 2011 so construction can proceed during summer, 2011, and the improvements can be completed and put into service by September, 2011.
