Sam Bailey grew in San Clemente and played water polo at UCLA where he earned a BA in Geography in 2000.  He was part of NCAA Division I championship teams in 1995, 1996 and 1999.

Sam was Assistant Coach for CDMHS Girls’ Water Polo for Head Coach Aaron Chaney from 2003- 2005. He was Head Coach of the CDM Boys’ Water Polo Team in 2004-2005 and was named CIF Coach of the Year in 2004. 


Sam then joined John Vargas at Stanford University as Assistant Coach of Men’s Water Polo. He has also been Assistant Coach of Men’s and Women’s Water Polo teams at UCLA’s where he was joined by Adam Krikorian (current National Team Head Coach), Matt Flesher (current Cal Berkeley Assistant Coach) and Brandon Brooks (current UCLA Head Coach). 


Coach Bailey is completing a Master's in Education and earning his teaching credential in Social Sciences. Outside of water polo, Sam is a dedicated volunteer and is the founding director of Eco Surf Volunteers, an international volunteer organization that works at schools in Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands.

Coach Brian Mericle
16U Head Coach

Brian attended Esperanza high school where he was a part of the 1994 Division II CIF championship team. During his high school water polo career he received First Team All League and All CIF honors and was a 1996 NISCA High School All-American.  As a USC graduate (class of 2001), Brian played varsity water polo at USC for Jovan Vavic, and was part of the 1998 NCAA Division I Championship team.  Brian has coached summer water polo and volunteered during the school year at Esperanza high school where his father has been an assistant coach on both the men's and women's teams for more than ten years.







Coach Brittany Fullen
Goalie Coach

Brittany played four years varsity water polo at CDM.  As starting goalie, she helped lead CDM to the CIF Championships in 2003, 2004 and 2005.  Her honors include: 2004 CIF Div II Player of the Year, 2005 CIF Div II Co-Player of the Year, 2004-05 Pacific Coast League MVP and 2004 All-County team.  From 2004-2007, Brittany was a member of the U.S. Youth National Team,  the Jr. National Team and the National "B" team.  Brittany went on to play water polo at UCLA where she was a 4-time NCAA Champion under current USA Women's National Team Head Coach Adam Krikorian.  While at UCLA, she collected 531 career saves (fourth-highest total in school history), posted a 4.68 career goals against average (fifth-highest in school history), and established UCLA's single-season saves record with 237 stops in 2008. Brittany graduated from UCLA in 2009 with a degree in History.

Coach Taylor Harkins

12U Assistant Coach

A 2007 CdMHS graduate, Taylor Harkins was a 3x CIF Champion in water polo, 4x letter winner in water polo and swimming, and was awarded the Most Inspirational Athlete by her coaches and teammates.  Most recently as a member of the Santa Clara University Women's Water Polo Team, Taylor established a new team record for career goals (171).  Taylor graduated from Santa Clara University with a BA in Marketing.









Coach Kacy Kunkel

12U Assistant Coach

As a member of the U.S. Youth National Team (2003) and U.S. Junior National Team (2005), Kacy helped lead her team to a Gold Medal finish at the FINA Junior World Championships (2005).  As a member of the UCLA Women's Water Polo Team, Kacy also registered a team-high 28 exclusions earned during her final season.  Over the course of her career at UCLA, Kacy helped lead the Bruins to three NCAA Division I Championships and one perfect season (33 wins and 0 losses).  Kacy graduated from UCLA with a BA in History.
